Ep 101: Back to School - Back to Business: Making the transition smooth, easy, & a success

with Lani Jackson

Congratulations, you survived the summer! And now we get to survive the transition from summer to back to school and back to business – doing the routines and all of that. So if you have kiddos in school (like me) and you’re transitioning to “back to school” during the month of August and September, this episode is going to be for you.

Here are some of the tips and tricks that I have learned along the way having six kiddos who are in school now for several years. There’s some things with combining back to school and getting back into the business that I really like and just feel help us as mom entrepreneurs.

This is going to be very mom centered advice as well as some business too, but I’m going to start on the mom’s side. Because this is really where it starts. We have to start with ourselves and our mom life and get that chaos all taken care of in order to feel settled.

“We don’t always have to be in mom mode or always be in business entrepreneurs, CEO mode.

There is also time for you just to be you. That’s a gift you can give yourself.”

The first thing to do when starting Back To School is

  • Take the day off
    • A half day off works too
  • Block the first day of school off
    • Keep this day as unscheduled as you can
      • Let yourself have no obligations
      • Have no expectations
      • Take a nap

The first week of school or a week before school starts

  • Take the week to plan

      • Restock your groceries
      • Reorganize your pantry
      • Go through the freezer

        • You can show up in your business
        • You show up with your family

Every 3 months there’s a big season change

  • With each change stop and look at your schedule
    • Ask yourself: Where do I want to be working?
      • How do I want to arrange my weeks that I can maximize my time?
      • Do I need to set aside a CEO day?
    • Set aside CEO days
      • Because you are the CEO of your house and your business
        • CEO days would include
          • *No client work*
          • Planning
          • Preparing
          • Brainstorming
          • Developing your business
          • Doing deep cleans in your home
          • Doing extra errands
          • Doctor appointments
        • This allows you to never have a conflict with your work because you know those days are set aside

Plan for sports

  • If your kids are doing sports in the school year
    • Get those forms together and turned in
    • Get everything you will need for those sports
      • Get together all backpacks and shoes they will need
      • Think about how the travel time in between sports will affect you
        • Could you listen to a podcast episode while waiting to pick your kid up?
        • Preparing to maximize your time will give you an added boost

Plan for Holidays

  • Go through your kids school calendar and mark off the days they don’t have school
    • So you can make your calendar
    • You know what’s coming up
    • Be prepared for random no school days or half days
  • Prepare so you don’t overbook
  • Prioritize your family

Reset

  • Your house
    • Make a deep clean schedule
    • Make a pact with a friend to help each other deep clean each other’s houses
    • Hire someone to deep clean

      • After school routine
      • Organization
    • How can you make them work for your business better?
      • What are the processes that I’m doing?
      • How can I make this work better for me?
      • How can I make it more efficient?
    • Clean them up and nail them in

Think about your goals

  • What are the things you want to accomplish between now and December or by January 1st?
    • What do you want to do?
    • How can you do that?
    • What’s it going to take?
  • Get the number or plan in your head
  • Don’t fill your schedule to the brim
    • Don’t book yourself solid from the moment you wake up to when you go to bed
    • Plan for flexibility
      • Leave room for the chaos
    • Be kind to yourself
    • Pace yourself
    • Set realistic expectations
    • Allow yourself to get used to the routine
