Ep 55. So many ideas. How do I focus on the right one?

The Summer Shorts Series

Hey BRILLIANT mamas!

I don’t know about you, but I’m an idea person and get inspired very easily! The issue is that while these ideas may be great; I don’t have time to pursue them all! So how do we focus on the right one? How do we know which is the right idea to focus on? In today’s episode I’m walking you through the process I take myself through any time I’m trying to pair down the ideas and choose which to focus on!

"Two things that you need to consider when you are looking at your next idea is, what is the amount of work it's going to take. And then what is the amount of impact it's going to make? "

Discussed in this Episode...

1. Brain Dump

So the first thing I do is get all those ideas out of my brain and somewhere I can see them. I usually pop open the Trello board that I have specifically for brainstorming and write out all my ideas. After they’re all out of my head, I go back and look at that list. With each idea I asked myself, do you really want to do this? Do you? Is this something you really, really want to do? Because here’s the thing, I often have really great ideas that I don’t actually want to do. Short form video may be a great idea, but do you really want to do it? Does it fit your life and your business? Now is when you start deleting some things off the list.

2. Break it Down

So before I choose which one too take action on, I will go in and just quickly sketch out of the steps it’s going to take to put this into action and maintain it. So for instance, if I was going to incorporate a reels strategy into my business, okay, how many reels would I produce a week? How much time do I think that would be? How  much effort would that take on my part? Take time and brainstorm each of those, and break it down a little bit further than just a general, “start a YouTube channel”, or “start short form video”.

3. How much impact is it going to make in your business?

Figuring this out means looking at several factors! How much work will this take to create? How much time do you have to work on this? How much would this cost me? What would be the return on investment?

Sometimes, I make decisions based on the ease of implementation because I don’t have a lot of time, and I just need to have a quick win. Other times, I know that this will make a massive impact, but it’s going to be a lot more effort to get it up and running. I need to really evaluate how much time I have available to put into this project. Do I need to choose the easier quick-win project that I have time to implement right now? What kind of time do you have available? And what is the impact you want to see in your business?

4. Prioritize

So, even after those first three steps we’ll probably have multiple ideas still on our list.  What we’re working to avoid here is a bunch of half finished projects or ideas! You’re going to need to prioritize your ideas and then stay focused and take action until the things are done. And small action, every single day, still takes you forward in business! Don’t be discouraged if your ideas take time or if results are sometimes slow! Stay consistent, don’t get distracted, stay focused and get those ideas executed!
