Ep 50. How to grow a business as a freelancer with Aubree Malick

Build a thriving, flexible business as a freelancer

Hey BRILLIANT Mompreneurs!

In today’s episode, we’re talking about all things freelancer with Aubree Malick! Aubree is a boy mom, former teacher, and host of the Freelancer to CEO podcast. Over three years ago she was able to quickly go full-time as a freelancer and stay home with her new baby, and now she empowers other mama’s to do the same! If you’ve been interested in growing a business as a freelancer this is the episode for you!

"If you're a stay at home mom you are managing schedules, you're meal planning, and those are all skills; having that organization and being able to control the chaos and juggle so many things. Those are skills that business owners maybe don't have, maybe they're more logical or analytical and you could really come in and support them. So no matter what your background is, no matter what your experiences, you can get started as a freelancer!"

Discussed in this Episode...

So you're interested in being a freelancer! Where do you start?

This does not need to be scary or take a long time, but there are a few things worth setting up and investing in right away.

First, register your business. You can start as a sole proprietor or an LLC, and each has it’s benefits. Aubree started as a sole proprietor, got her EIN number from the IRS website and then went and register her brand new business with her county. She was ready to go in less than a week!

If you’ve got a computer and you’ve got WiFi, there are so many programs that you can use to help you run your business! The one software Aubree does recommend investing in is a Customer Relation Management Tool (or CRM) like Dubsado or HoneyBook. You can handle all your invoicing, contracts, client communication, and so much more right in one program. It’s one of Aubree’s non-negotiables just because of how much time is saves!

Setting yourself up well right at the start will be a tremendous help when you want to scale later on!

How do you find clients?

Aubree’s answer usually surprises people; her first client came from a personal Facebook post! She decided to just put herself out there and let people that she was connected to know what she was doing. She shared a little about what she was offering, what a virtual assistant is, and what kind of clients she was looking forward to working with.  She asked her friends to send anyone they knew who was looking for a virtual assistant to send them her way. From that post she had someone reach out who she had worked with before as a teacher, and it lead to her first client.

Aubree’s challenge to you is, when is the last time you posted about what you do on your personal page? Does your network know what you are building?
