Episode 45: Summer Proof Your Business - Week 1
Use May to set your summer up for success!
Hey BRILLIANT Mompreneurs!
"How do you want your summer to go? Give me some adjectives like; "I want it to be fun and memorable." "I want there to be growth in my business, and not be falling behind.""I want it to be easy and simple." Those are the things I wrote down. Now you go write some stuff down! How do you want your summer to go? What is your mindset?"
Discussed in this Episode...
The first thing we're going to talk about is YOU!
You are the one that has to prepare yourself, and I always like to start with mindset and expectations. If you want to set yourself up for success this summer (in your business and family) you have to start with yourself. Now, as mama’s, that not always normal for most of us. Most of the time we’re thinking about everybody else; our clients, our kids, our spouses, our house, even the activities coming up. Right now though, you need to focus on yourself, which will start shifting your mindset.
This may sound too simple, but it’s the most important part of the strategy I can share with you. You have got to make a mindset shift and look at what you believe your summer is going to look like. I’ll be honest here, just a few years ago I would dread summer. I anticipated chaos, not getting any work done, the kids getting into my space and work time, and my business suffering. And guess what; that’s exactly how my summers went.
If you start with the belief that your summer is going to be awesome, amazing, easy and memorable, that’s what’s going to happen. But the same holds true for if you believe it’s going to be chaotic, frustrating, and really hard to squeeze in work. It sounds like the simplest and silliest thing, but a mindset shift will make all the difference.
So this is the question I want you to ask yourself; How do you want your summer to go? What do you want your summer to look like? And just take two seconds to write it down. Use some adjectives! Do you want it to be fun and memorable? Do you want there to be growth in your business? Writing it down is step number one.
Number two, reset and adjust your schedule starting now.
If you wait to plan the schedule for your week, or your day, and adjust your time on the first day of summer, you’re going to be frustrated. I like to work with my clients starting in the first week of May. How many hours do you want to work a week in the summer? Or how many days per week do you want to work in the summer? Asking those questions to ourselves will help us make plans and start adjusting now.
I want to take every Friday off, so I have that extra time to be present with my kids. I’ve done it before and we call them Fun Fridays. We use that day to go to a waterpark, or to the zoo, or go park-hopping and it made for such a fun summer! In addition to Fridays off, I want to take a full week off every month! I know I need to start adjusting my schedule now; because that is a major difference from the normal amount of time I invest in my business.
My favorite tool to help me do this is Trello. (Trello is hands-down my favorite business tool as a Mompreneur; keeping me organized and eliminating my need for a planner or to-do list!) If you’re new to Trello, I have a free template for you at Lanijackson.com/summerproof ! You’ll also get access to the emails that we’re sending with a bunch of resources to help you summer-proof your business.
So back to Trello! I have a board dedicated to keeping my schedule. Now is when you’ll mark off any vacations, wedding or events that you know are coming up in the summer.
