Ep. 69 How to Grow Your MLM Business and be a Mom

with Amanda Masterson

Hey BRILLIANT mamas!

Today’s episode is especially for my Multi Level Marketing and Direct-Sales Momprenuers! We’re chatting with Amanda Masterson, host of The Mompreneur Coach Podcast and coach for moms in the online social selling and network marketing industries. We’re diving into the realities of direct sales, and how you need to be willing to invest in yourself to reach the goals you’ve set for yourself. Whether you have an independent business or you are part of an MLM, you can make your business dreams happen!

"You have to really establish some foundational boundaries. You can create a bomb business in 60 minutes a day, but only if you understand what the vital behaviors are that you should be doing daily, and you commit to doing those."

Discussed in this Episode...

Why is there negativity about multi level marketing businesses?

Just like with any industry, the actions of a few people can create a stereotype for the whole group. There are a few people who have created this stereotype that multi-level marketing companies are a pyramid scheme. And this is not at all the truth! The truth is that many of these companies have superior products and legitimate, flexible job opportunities for mompreneurs! You can market in an ethical and authentic way.

The bad rap comes in when ambitious mompreneurs jump into this business without any training or marketing experience. Often they’re just flopping around like a fish out of water; doing the best they can to build this business. A lot of times though, those efforts come off as spammy or overwhelming. To make things worse, their up-line may even be telling them to market in this spammy way while they themselves have no sales or marketing skills either.

So how do we start?

This is why Amanda created her ABC method for mompreneurs. Within that program she focuses on three pillars, which are the three things that she believes you need to invest in order to be successful in the network marketing business.

The first pillar is Mindset.
Many mompreneurs live in a space where they really lean into life that type-A personality or being a perfectionist. As an entrepreneur in general though, and not in the network marketing industry, you have to do things messy sometimes! Establishing a mindset where you don’t connect the success of your business to your self worth is first and foremost!

And once we’ve tackled that, then you’ve got to invest in yourself and learn some skills! You need to learn as much as you can about sales, marketing, messaging, and leadership.

You also have to really establish some foundational boundaries. You can create a bomb business in 60 minutes a day; but only if you understand what the vital behaviors are that you should be doing daily! For instance, often moms in the network marketing space say that they’re working their business; but what they’re really doing is scrolling social media for hours and hours and hours. And that’s not producing sales!

Are the strategies these companies offer enough to be truly successful?

In Amanda’s opinion, no. It’s even close to being enough. In her experience, they provide graphics and things like that. Your up-line really directs you on how to build your business, how to create copy, what kind of posts to make, and things like that. What has been created is a market that’s so saturated, with all of these reps and all of these consultants, and they’re all posting the same things. As an entrepreneur in the network marketing space, you really just blend into the noise of social media most of the time.

And that’s where you get to the point where you’re just spinning your wheels. You just feel so overwhelmed because you’re working so hard, and you’re not bringing in the sales. Amanda has seen that in order to be successful you have to invest in more training for marketing, or sales education, that teaches you the psychology of sales. You need to fully understand what your target market wants and needs, and then you have to be able to create copy around that.

It’s sad, because sometimes in the culture of MLM things are said like “we’re gonna give you everything, you don’t need to invest in yourself in any other way”. The truth is though, regardless of what industry you’re in, if you are wanting to grow anything you should be investing in yourself. This goes for anything; your abilities as a mom entrepreneur, or as a mom. We want to DIY it, hack it, to get all the free things, and there can be a hesitancy to invest in ourselves.
